Sixth annual Halloween Howleroo!

September 28, 2010 - Leave a Response

Wow, six years of greyhounds wandering Edmonton’s river valley in costume. And this year, we actually get to do it on Halloween!

We’ll be meeting on 31 October at 2 pm in the parking lot of the Kinsman Field House for a leisurely 4 km-ish walk through the river valley. The paths are well used, so the hounds are sure to get lots of attention! Please see a map here.

Costumes for greyhounds are recommended, and to be eligible for prizes your greyhound must be dressed up. Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds don’t hate you for dressing them up for Halloween!

As always with this time of year, walks are weather dependent. If it’s blizzarding, below -15, or otherwise severely unpleasant, check back here for a rescheduled date.

August 14/15 Walks

August 10, 2010 - Leave a Response

This coming weekend will host two walks.

First, the Bon Accord Harvest Days parade will take place on Saturday August 14. Contact Deb if you plan to attend. We will meet at the Husky station in Bon Accord at 10 am. It’s right along Highway 28, and you can’t miss it.

Then, for those not parade-inclined, we’ll have the regularly scheduled Too-Hot-To-Move walk on Sunday August 15 around Beaumaris Lake in North Edmonton. The trail is a relatively flat, leisurely 3 km from beginning to end. Mosquito repellent may be in order, however! Meet at Bishop Savaryn Elementary School, located at 16215 – 109 Street, at 11 am (early to beat the heat and maybe the skeeters). Click here for a map of the walk.

Hope to see you there!

June 13 Walk

June 10, 2010 - Leave a Response

Sunday’s forecast is still looking good, so we’ll be walking at the Strathcona Science Provincial Park (10980 – 17 Street). This time we’ll meet in the parking lot further into the park, near the buildings at the top of the ridge, so head further south into the park to the parking lot there. We’ll meet at 2 pm for about an hour’s walk.

May 16 Walk

May 11, 2010 - Leave a Response

This Sunday, we’ll be traversing Old Glenora to ogle some of the historical houses in that neighbourhood. If I can get the book out of the library again, we’ll have annotations to the walk as well! Meet at the parking lot of the Royal Alberta Museum (12845 – 102 Avenue) at 2 pm for a leisurely 4.5 km walk in this great neighbourhood. Click the button below for the proposed map!

Happy belated Easter, everyone! This Sunday we’ll be walking along the Red Willow Trail in St. Albert. Meet behind the cenotaph beside St. Albert Place (click for map) at 2 pm. There is lots of parking in the lot across the street. We’ll proceed west towards the St. Albert Botanical Gardens. Sunday’s forecast is looking to be on the chilly side, but we’ll have the walking to keep us warm!

A year of walks, and the next one!

January 22, 2010 - Leave a Response

I’ve updated the Events calendar for the next 12 months of events that I know about, so pencil them into your calendar! As always, walks are weather-dependent. Wind-chills of below -15, blizzard conditions, etc will postpone a winter walk, while thunderstorms will postpone a summer one. However, scheduling this far in advance will help keep us on track for the year! If you know of an event that I’ve missed, please let me know and I’ll add it to the calendar. Also note that the December walk will be the Jingle On Parade through the walkways of downtown Edmonton, but as yet I don’t know the date of that one.

We’re lucky this year in that two holidays fall on Sundays, so we can celebrate with our hounds! The first is Valentine’s Day, on Sunday February 14. We’ll be walking around Beaumaris Lake in North Edmonton. The trail is plowed, relatively flat for those poor hounds who haven’t been able to get out as much and maintain their summer stamina (like mine), and a leisurely 3 km from beginning to end. Meet at Bishop Savaryn Elementary School, located at 16215 – 109 Street, at 2 pm. Click here for a map of the walk. If the forecast looks bad as we get closer, I will reschedule the walk, so check back in the week before!

One final note: it seems that the email for edmontongreyhounds.ca is flaking out, so until I figure out what’s wrong, please email my personal account at vmbjerre at telus dot net. :)

Hope to see everyone next month!
