Due to an unprecedented six Chinook Winds Meet and Greets being hosted on Saturday and Sunday combined, we’re moving the Valentine’s Day walk from Sunday to Monday 15 February! All times and locations remain the same. Hope to see you then!
A year of walks, and the next one!
I’ve updated the Events calendar for the next 12 months of events that I know about, so pencil them into your calendar! As always, walks are weather-dependent. Wind-chills of below -15, blizzard conditions, etc will postpone a winter walk, while thunderstorms will postpone a summer one. However, scheduling this far in advance will help keep us on track for the year! If you know of an event that I’ve missed, please let me know and I’ll add it to the calendar. Also note that the December walk will be the Jingle On Parade through the walkways of downtown Edmonton, but as yet I don’t know the date of that one.
We’re lucky this year in that two holidays fall on Sundays, so we can celebrate with our hounds! The first is Valentine’s Day, on Sunday February 14. We’ll be walking around Beaumaris Lake in North Edmonton. The trail is plowed, relatively flat for those poor hounds who haven’t been able to get out as much and maintain their summer stamina (like mine), and a leisurely 3 km from beginning to end. Meet at Bishop Savaryn Elementary School, located at 16215 – 109 Street, at 2 pm. Click here for a map of the walk. If the forecast looks bad as we get closer, I will reschedule the walk, so check back in the week before!
One final note: it seems that the email for edmontongreyhounds.ca is flaking out, so until I figure out what’s wrong, please email my personal account at vmbjerre at telus dot net.
Hope to see everyone next month!
Edmonton Grey-Sitting Coop
There’s a new page on the site for the Edmonton Grey-Sitting Coop. Check it out up top there, and if you want to be a listed grey-sitter, just drop me a line!
Christmas Events
December is going to be upon us before we know it, so here are some details on the Christmas walk and photos.
Christmas photos will take place at Petsmart North (13916 – 137 Avenue) on December 5 from 2-4 pm, and at Petsmart East (13680 – 50 Street) on December 12, 13, and 19 from 11 am to 4 pm. Proceeds from the photos these four days will go to Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue. Come out and get a picture of your grey with a greyhound-savvy Santa and elves!
The Christmas walk will be the Jingle-On Parade. The Jingle-On Parade takes place through the pedways of downtown Edmonton, and is a great indoor walk. The greyhounds are Santa’s reindeer and jingle dogs, and there is plenty of opportunity for pets and lovings. To sign up for the walk, please contact Deb Ward.
There is also a Fun Run scheduled at John and Deb’s for New Year’s Day, weather permitting. Everyone cross your fingers for a nice New Year’s so we can let the hounds celebrate too!
As always, any questions, drop me a line!
Photos from Halloween
Thanks, everyone, for coming out to the Halloween walk! There are photos here:

I’ll be updating the calendar soon for the next while. There will definitely be a Valentine’s and a St. Patty’s Day walk planned (weather permitting), so keep an eye on the site for details.
The Jingle-On Parade will be December’s walk, so keep an eye on the site for time, date, and details!
Halloween Howleroo the Fifth: October 25
It’s that time of year again! Time to get out the sewing machine, or be creative with your closet, or zip off to the local pet store for something that might fit a greyhound, because the annual Halloween Howleroo is upon us!
We’ll be meeting on 25 October at 2 pm in the parking lot of the Kinsman Field House for a leisurely 4 km-ish walk through the river valley. The paths are well used, so the hounds are sure to get lots of attention! Please see a map here.
Costumes for greyhounds are recommended, and to be eligible for prizes your greyhound must be dressed up. Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds don’t hate you for dressing them up for Halloween!
As always with this time of year, walks are weather dependent. If it’s blizzarding, below -15, or otherwise severely unpleasant, we’ll reschedule the walk for November 1. But we’re all going to cross our fingers for good weather! We deserve it!
September 20 Walk Details
Sorry again for the short notice, everyone! I’ll tell you all about it if you come out on Sunday.
This Sunday’s walk will be at the Strathcona Science Provincial Park. I hear it’s a nice pleasant walk on the city’s east end. I’ve borrowed this map and directions from Alberta Orienteering, so we’ll meet in the parking lot of the ski lodge at 2 pm for about an hour’s walk. Since I’ve never been there personally, I’ll make up a MapMyWalk map after we’ve been and save it for later walks.
The fifth annual Halloween Howleroo will take place on October 25 (weather permitting), departing from the Kinsman Field House at 2 pm. I’ll make a separate post next week will full details!
August 9 Walk
Sorry for the delay, everyone! I was trying to find a good east Edmonton walk, but my efforts have failed… So instead, I thought it might be nice to go to Beaumaris Lake again, as that’s a lovely walk over relatively flat terrain, and should be relatively cool for the greys on this upcoming weekend. Meet at Bishop Savaryn Elementary School, located at 16215 – 109 Street, at 1 pm on Sunday 7 August. We’ll head to Beaumaris Lake for a leisurely 3 km walk. If anyone has any suggestions for an east Edmonton walk that isn’t in an offleash area, I’d love to hear it!

July 1 Walk Details
Thanks to Sonia from Red Deer who came out to the June Walk! Hopefully next time you make the drive, there’ll be more than one other greyhound for you to walk with!
July’s walk will be the Fort Saskatchewan Canada Day Parade with Chinook Winds. July 1 is a statutory holiday, and why not spend the morning parading with your greyhound and friends to celebrate? It’s loads of fun, as you can see in the Gallery section for the last two years. To get more information, please contact Debbie Ward, as she is arranging the volunteers for the event.
The walk after that will be August 9. Stay tuned for details!
June 7 Walk Details
Thanks to everyone who made our Mother’s Day walk a success! For June 7, we’ll be walking along the Red Willow Trail in St. Albert. Meet behind the cenotaph beside St. Albert Place (click for map) at 1 pm. There is lots of parking in the lot across the street. We’ll proceed west towards the St. Albert Botanical Gardens and River Lot 56 (but we probably won’t get all the way out there!). The trail is treed for most of the way, so the hounds should get plenty of shade, and the trend right now is talking below average temperatures, around the 17 degree high mark. It should make for a pleasant, enjoyable walk!
Remember that the July walk will be the Fort Saskatchewan Canada Day parade! Watch this space for more details!
